43:
43:
To banish evil
Anklets in your tiny feet[i], rope[ii] and bull hook[iii] in your left & right hand
Quiver set of flower-arrows five[iv], sweet words in your mouth grand
Beautiful in all the three worlds[v], ochre-hued physique[vi]
Such is your form[vii] when Siva killed the evil-minded demons of Tripura, sons of Taraka
Sitting by Him of scarlet colour[viii] as his half other
He whose archery with Mt.Meru as his bow is inimitable forever.
44:
44:
To be rid of separation pangs
Forever in penance[ix] to be the consort of Sankara[x], our Lord
Also becoming His mother once[xi], and She is Supreme God
Overlord of all other Gods[xii], why should I hesitate hence
I have no other God to serve open-hearted!

against the evil-spirited.

[xi] Compare SL 53 – Amba’s capability to create the Trinity afresh, hence their mother. Also recall when the Trinity begged Rshi Atri’s wife the ever-chaste, Anasuya, to feed them while being naked. Anasuya with her mystic powers turned them into toddlers and fed them, as they desired. Later when the consorts of Trinity turned up looking for their worthy husbands, they were handed in to their respective wives as babies. Hence, Amba handled Siva as she would a baby, hence his mother!
A version of Ramayana describes an incident where Ravana’s wife Mandodari – a devout devotee of Siva herself, was once conversing with Siva as a comely young man before her. Ravana suddenly appeared on the scene and to avoid any unpleasantness, Mandodari turned Siva into a toddler and Amba then appeared there to claim the baby as hers! Hence Siva’s mother!
